1. Introduction to Regent® 5 SC

In modern agriculture, crop protection is crucial for ensuring food security and profitability. Among the trusted insecticides used globally, Regent® 5 SC stands out for its broad-spectrum effectiveness and innovative formulation. Produced by BASF, this insecticide is known for delivering fast and long-lasting control against various insect pests.

2. What is Regent® 5 SC?

Regent® 5 SC is a systemic insecticide formulated as a Suspension Concentrate (SC). It contains 5% Fipronil, a highly effective active ingredient. It is designed to control a wide range of soil and foliar insects in crops such as rice, sugarcane, cotton, vegetables, and more.

Its unique action on the insect nervous system makes it ideal for integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.

3. Key Features of Regent® 5 SC

  • There is target site specificity between insects and mammals, with Fipronil displaying tighter binding (i.e., higher potency) in the insect GABA chloride channel than mammals, providing useful selective toxicity. This sets Fipronil apart from most commercial insecticides
  • Fipronil has both contact and ingestion activity, but is particularly effective by way of ingestion. The rapid knockdown effect associated with some insecticides is absent in Fipronil and insect mortality may appear to be moderately slow. However, intermediate responses, such as cessation of feeding, may be noted soon after treatment. Residual control following foliar application is in general good to excellent
  • The site of action of Fipronil sets it apart from most commercial insecticides. a new generation insecticide belonging to new family of Phenyl Pyrazole
  • Regent 5 SC spray is an ideal choice for IPM
  • Regent 5 SC spray has shown demonstrable Plant Growth Enhancement (PGE) effect in many crops
  • Regent 5 SC is an excellent thripicide

4. Active Ingredient: Fipronil

The main component in Regent® 5 SC is Fipronil, a phenylpyrazole compound that disrupts the insect central nervous system. Fipronil targets GABA-regulated chloride channels, leading to hyperexcitation, paralysis, and death of the pest.

Chemical Composition:

  • Fipronil – 5% w/w

  • Formulation type – Suspension Concentrate (SC)

5. Mode of Action

Fipronil acts by interfering with the passage of chloride ions in the insect’s central nervous system, leading to uncontrollable nerve firing. This causes paralysis and eventual death. It is effective both through ingestion and contact, making it lethal even if pests do not consume treated plants directly. Primarily acts as an ingestion toxicant with some complimentary contact action and acts by interfering in nerve impulse transmission. It interferes with the passage of chloride ions through the Gamma Amino Butyric Acid (GABA) regulated chloride channel, thereby disrupting CNS activity and at sufficient doses, causing insect death.

Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) Classification No. 2 B

6. Plant Growth Enhancement

Fipronil aids in increasing the yield of crops by controlling pests that reduce crop growth. It is observed that in the absence of injurious pests Fipronil can improve the vigor and yields of crops and therefore also the quality.

In rice, corn and sugarcane, field observations indicated the following effects:

  • More developed root system, increased numbers of tillers and more productive tillers
  • Greener plants, increase in leaf area and plant height
  • Earlier flowering and maturity of grain leading to significant increase in yields

Fipronil formulations have been designed to be compatible with a wide range of insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and liquid fertilizers. Perform a simple jar test beforehand if there is any question regarding the compatibility of these formulations with another tank mix partner.

7. Crop and Target Pests:

Regent® 5 SC is effective against a wide array of pests, including:

Crop Target Pest
Rice Green Leaf Hopper,  Gall midge Whorl Maggot, Stem Borer, Leaf Folder, Brown Plant Hopper, White Backed Plant Hopper
Chilli Thrips, Aphids and Fruit Borer
Cabbage Diamond-back Moth
Sugarcane Early Shoot Borer and Root Borer
Cotton Aphid, Jassid, Thrips, White Fly
Boll Worms

8. Crops Treated with Regent® 5 SC

This insecticide is used on a variety of crops:

  • Paddy (Rice)

  • Sugarcane

  • Cotton

  • Chili

  • Tomato

  • Brinjal

  • Cabbage

  • Potato

  • Maize

It is particularly popular in rice cultivation due to its efficacy against stem borers and leaf folders.

9. Application Guidelines

To achieve optimal pest control, the application should be carried out during early infestation or at the time of sowing/transplanting. Timing and method of application may vary depending on the crop and pest lifecycle. While Regent® 5 SC is primarily known for its use in rice(paddy), it is also effective in a wide variety of crops.

1. Rice (Paddy)

  • Controls: Yellow stem borer, leaf folder, whorl maggot, gall midge

  • Application: Root dipping and soil drenching at transplanting

2. Sugarcane

  • Controls: Termites and early shoot borers

  • Application: Soil application during planting

3. Cotton

  • Controls: White grubs and termites

  • Application: Soil treatment before sowing or early in the growing stage

4. Groundnut (Peanut)

  • Controls: White grubs

  • Application: Soil treatment or seedling root dip

5. Maize, Wheat, and Pulses

  • Controls: Stem borers and termites

  • Application: Soil incorporation at the time of sowing

10. Recommended Application Methods of Regent ® 5 SC

The application method of Regent® 5 SC may vary depending on the crop and target pest. Here are the standard recommended methods:

1. Root Dip Method

  • Ideal for transplanted crops like rice.

  • Seedlings are dipped in a Regent® 5 SC solution before transplanting.

  • Recommended Dosage: 1-2 ml per liter of water

  • Duration: Dip seedlings for 12-24 hours for optimal absorption.

2. Soil Application

  • Apply at the time of sowing or transplanting to control soil-borne pests.

  • Can be mixed with sand or compost and applied directly to the field.

3. Seedling Tray Treatment

  • For crops like rice or vegetables grown in nursery trays.

  • Apply as a drench before transplanting.

4. Foliar Spray

  • Though not the primary method, it can be used in emergencies.

  • Dosage and dilution should follow label guidelines.

11. Dosage and Mixing Instructions of Regent ® 5 SC
